Estonia's capital is rolling out the red carpet for digital nomads—and it's not just about the medieval charm. Tallinn's new "digital nomad" visa lets remote workers stick around for up to a year, offering a perfect blend of old-world atmosphere and cutting-edge digital infrastructure.

With city center apartments going for about $500 a month and internet that actually works (we're talking 90% expat satisfaction with e-services), Tallinn is positioning itself as the go-to spot for location-flexible professionals. The city's digital game is so strong that literally every expat surveyed reported zero issues with online access.

There's a catch though—making local friends might be a bit of a challenge, with over half of expats struggling to break into social circles. But between the efficient public transit and clean streets, many find the trade-off worth it.

For remote workers dreaming of a change of scenery, Tallinn offers a unique proposition: a chance to work from a city where medieval towers meet modern tech. If you've been thinking about taking your remote work international, Estonia's digital utopia might be calling your name.

Step Back in Time on Japan’s Ancient Highway

The Nakasendo Way was the northern mountain road between Tokyo and Kyoto. There were 69 post towns which served as overnight stopping points for travellers, providing lodging, food and entertainment! Magome-juku is a wonderful example of a historic post town still functioning.

Walking the Nakasendo Way is a journey through Japan’s Edo-period history, following the same mountain route that once connected Kyoto and Edo (modern Tokyo). Unlike the coastal Tōkaidō, this inland highway passed through 69 post towns, where samurai, merchants, and pilgrims found lodging, fresh horses, and porter services under shogunate rule.

Today, one of the most popular sections runs between Tsumago and Magome in the Kiso Valley. This 8-kilometer trail follows original stone paths through cedar forests, passing restored kosatsuba notice boards that once displayed shogunate decrees. The towns themselves preserve Edo-period architecture, with wooden merchant houses, latticed windows, and raised tatami rooms once used by travelers.

Along the way, Ichikokutei Tateba teahouse offers a glimpse into the past, where porters once exchanged loads and travelers rested over tea served in locally crafted ceramics. The surrounding landscape remains much as it was when these forests provided timber for Edo’s construction.

More than just a scenic hike, walking the Nakasendo Way is a step into Japan’s past. The route played a key role in the sankin-kōtai system, which required daimyo lords to make costly journeys to Edo, helping the shogunate maintain control. Every step retraces a history shaped by politics, commerce, and tradition, making it one of Japan’s most immersive historical walks.

Bali's local entrepreneurs are frustrated with the frugal spending habits of some of the island's over 6 million international visitors. Business owners report that low-spending tourists, dubbed 'Turis sandal jepit' or flip-flop tourists, often occupy space without making significant purchases, impacting revenue. Some suggest adopting a Bhutan-style tourism model to attract higher-spending visitors.
