Top 5 African Cities for Remote Workers in 2023

With advanced technology at their finger tips, tech-savvy individuals have been finding new and interesting hidden gems. Armed with just a laptop and an internet connection, we are seeing a new revolution of remote workers trying out African nations for work and travel. One of our members Weh’yee is building his case as a nomad leader in this area.

Thanks to him, many African cities have found their names among some of the best cities digital nomads are heading to. Here are the top 5 cities in Africa for remote workers.

  1. Cape Town – South Africa

The volume of Instagram posts in Cape Town is a telling tale. Could it become THE top destination for digital nomads in Africa? The typical visa for visitors visiting Cape Town is good for three months, however it can be extended to six months.

Gardens is a cool neighborhood to check out in C.T. The city offers fantastic outdoor activities including hiking and other outdoor sports. There are also a ton of amazing cafés and workspaces available. Nomads should anticipate inexpensive handcrafted wines at the local neighborhood tavern because of the proximity of nearby vineyards.

  1. Nairobi – Kenya

Nairobi – Kenya

The remote working infrastructure is particularly booming in Nairobi. The city has over 30 co-working locations to select from and more than 200 grassroots social business enterprises.

The city is the only capital city in the world with a national park situated just next to the country's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Safaris, bike riding, hiking, shooting ranges, swimming pools and go-karting facilities could keep nomads occupied in their downtime. The low cost of living is another benefit for digital nomads that want quality for a great price. This overall makes remaining here incredibly addicting. Oh and we heard the street street food is yummy!

  1. Marrakesh – Morocco

Marrakesh – Morocco

It makes sense that digital nomads would travel to Marrakesh given the chance to stay in a luxurious riad. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an indoor garden and courtyard. The riads of Marrakesh are truly outstanding pieces of art, not merely somewhere to sleep at night.

Riads include mosaics made of multicolored tiles, elaborately carved archways, tall pillars, spa-like dipping pools, vivid color accents, comfortable seats, and more! Although the city was ranked 13th in Tripadvisor's list of popular travel destinations, digital nomads might have trouble connecting to the internet there because the country's standard download speed is only 6.55 Mbps.

  1. Zanzibar – Tanzania

A digital nomad's preference is to live somewhere with low living expenses, nice cuisine, and pleasant weather all year round. Zanzibar is therefore a conducive place for digital nomads. The area has quaint stone houses and marketplaces brimming with fresh fruits everywhere.

While working from a café or hotel, digital nomads can enjoy the white sand beaches. Zanzibar Island is commonly known as the "Spice Island" due to the cultivation and processing of flavorful spices including cloves, black pepper, lemongrass, turmeric, cinnamon, and nutmeg,

  1. Cairo – Egypt

Cairo – Egypt

In comparison to the rest of Egypt, Cairo has a large start-up ecosystem, is affordable, and a reliable metro system. The city has one of the lowest living costs on this list, which is good news for digital nomads.
