🏊 DEEP DIVE

Starting A Shoe Business With Artificial Intelligence

by Olumide Gbenro

Hey everyone, it’s Olumide the founder of the newsletter you’re currently reading. The best thing about running a community-focused newsletter like this one is I can connect directly with YOU! My amazing community members who I feel I can always share exactly where I am in life.

I feel like I can be myself and tell you guys anything without fear of judgment.

So here goes nothing…

For the last year, I’ve been contemplating starting a shoe business. Yes really, a premium one like Yeezy but for digital nomads and business travelers. There’s nothing like this on the market.

I’m serious.

The recurring dream I kept having was seeing millions of travelers and digital nomads around the world wearing the sneakers I created.

When I told my partner, we came up with the name Cloud 9.

What type of sneakers would Cloud 9 be?

It would be SUPER comfortable, extremely eye-catching, and affordable.

Prompt: “Colorful running shoe brand for digital nomads”

Kinda matches our Nomad Cloud newsletter doesn’t it.

My secret vision has always been to create a massive impact in the nomadic life movement, so much as to become the Virgin of the digital nomad space.

We will do Shoes, Apparel, Debit Cards, Insurance, Tech Products, and more!

Big dreams, I know but I believe in myself finally to dream this big.

So anyways back to the thought. I didn’t know where or how to start this big dream.

Till the recent advent of AI started to show me what was possible

With ChatGPT I figured out how to prompt it to give me a sample e-commerce site for a “Futuristic yet Colorful Sneaker for Digital Nomads”

Here are some ideas the AI came up with. What do you think?

Anyways this was just the first step, to put the vision on paper as they say.

To make it real.

My next step would be to order an expensive sample from a manufacturer in South East Asia I found.

But before that, I have a question.

Is a brand like this something digital nomads would be interested in?

Would you buy super comfortable, stylish, and colorful sneakers for traveling the world?

Prompt: futuristic sneakers for business travelers inspired by apple

Vote in the live poll below and if we get enough interested people I will keep sharing my progress in this “Deep Dive” section.

Should We Keep Developing This “Sneaker for Digital Nomads” idea?

✈️ 8 things you need to hear before moving abroad

I relocated 19 times, 7 out of these were international moves as a family of 5. So I do know a thing or two about the highs and lows, the overwhelm and the anxiety around moving my family abroad. Not only have these experiences transformed our lives and turned into a passion for slow travelling. They have also brought about a change in my career from talent manager to relocation coach as I now guide other bold expats, mostly families, on their journeys abroad - holistically.

So trust me on these 8 things to stay calm and actually find joy in the exciting process of relocating

☀️ You don’t need to know everything. You’ll grow into it. Trust that the right information will always come to you at the right time.

☀️ Fearful people will try to place their fears onto you. If someone only points out the cons it is their life they are reflecting. So go listen to the optimists close to you instead. It’s your life, remember?

☀️ A lot of stress comes from packing and aiming to bring along too much stuff. Try the minimalist approach and really just take the essentials. You'll be surprised how much lighter that feels.

☀️ You are going to be physically away from your family and friends but I experienced that you are sometimes closer to them the further you are away. Keep in touch and allow your loved ones to be part of this new chapter. Don't try to prove anything but make sure to share with them both the ups and downs, the highlights and the difficult moments. And try to understand that people might be hurt for you leaving them.

☀️ Wherever you move to, there are people living there. They may not always receive you with open arms or roll out the red carpet just for you. YOU will need to take the first steps in any interaction with those around you. Start early. Even before arriving.

☀️ While it may be helpful to speak the language spoken the new country you don't need to be fluent before arriving. However, make sure you know these two: 'hello' and 'thank you', accompanied by a smile. People will get from your accent that you are not a local but will appreciate the effort. You managed to break the ice and you are off to a positive start. The beginning of many new encounters.

☀️ It will be a rollercoaster. After the initial excitement and adrenaline 2-3 months into your relocation you’ll experience a sudden mental low when you'll start missing your old life, when you realise things aren’t exactly as you expected and when you'll start questioning whether this was the right decision. This is when many people make a U-turn. Plan some highlights for these crucial few weeks to stick through, for instance friends visiting, a weekend out exploring your new region, signing up to a new activity or a catch-up call with your relocation coach. Things WILL improve day by day and your life WILL turn into the very vision you had designed.

☀️ A relocation isn’t a one-way ticket like in the old days. If things truly don’t work out you can always end this chapter and start a new one, move on or come back. It is never a failure but simply one more experience helping you to become a better and more resourceful YOU.

About Doris: As a slow travel family we have explored over 80 countries (over 40 together with my three children) and relocated 19 times (7 international moves with the kids). I now support mostly families to holistically prepare for an upcoming move, for intense travels or for the start into digital nomading. My experience from 15 years in talent management, my life coach certification and my experience as a digital nomad family place me into a pioneer position as a relocation coach for families, couples and individuals striving to redesign their life - on the move.

🧠 HUSTLE ZONE

Occasionally community members reach out to us to share their business or startup ideas. Today meet a member who wants to share a cool idea that relates to all of us. His name is Guillaume.

I'm Guillaume Lesage, a 25 year old entrepreneur. I'm about to launch Gullu, an app that could change the life of travelers. It's an innovative social network dedicated to travelers that allows them to stay in touch with our friends from all over the world and to see them again in real life.🚀

The story behind Gullu starts with 5 years of traveling (10,000 km hitchhiking, India, Nepal, Vietnam...). Gullu is above all a human adventure, a story of sharing and meeting people.

You have already traveled, experienced extraordinary things, you have many beautiful stories, encounters that have marked you... and once back, with the passing of time, haven't you realized that many friendships have been lost? 😞

Me too 😉! To prevent this from ever happening again I decided to create GULLU!

🗺️ An interactive map, which allows you to see in which city your friends are and receive a notification if a friend is nearby. 🔔

🤳To join the Gullu community, all you need to do is take a selfie and add your friends to the app.

Why a selfie?

Nothing is better than a photo, a moment to remember someone

🌟The essence of Gullu is to strengthen friendships and to reinvent the consumption of social networks by focusing on the essential.

Gullu is a dream that comes true, a great human adventure that I want to share with as many people as possible and that hopefully will become a must for all travelers! 😁

The app will be released in May 2023 and I'm so excited to spread it around the world 🌍

Feel free to contact me, I'm 100% open for any collaborations, advices or feedbacks 😉

🌎 LIFESTYLE

THE NEXT DIGITAL NOMAD HOTSPOT?

A lot of places like Bali, Medellín & Playa del Carmen used to be considered cheap for digital nomads but I don’t think they’re that cheap anymore.

That’s why I say Skopje, North Macedonia will be the next digital nomad hop spot! It is a place that offers digital nomads a great lifestyle at a very affordable price.

Digital Nomad Amenities

It has a lot of other great benefits digital nomads need & want like:

  • Safety

  • An international airport

  • Easily accessible public transportation

  • Great infrastructure like electricity & internet

  • Solid cellular connectivity

The only thing missing to make Skopje a slam dunk as a digital nomad destination is that it’s in North Macedonia, a landlocked country just north of Greece.

However, it is located in close proximity to Lake Ohrid, a well-known UNESCO World Heritage site where people flock especially during the hot summer months. [In fact, click HERE to read Kate Shifman‘s great article from last summer on living & working remotely from Lake Ohrid.]

Cost of Living

To give you a little insight into how much it costs to live in Skopje, here is some rough pricing based on my 1-month stay there last summer:

🏡 Rent a very nice condo in a great neighborhood for $700-1200/mo.

🍽 Eat & drink at normal restaurants for $5-10/meal or fancy for $25-35/meal.

☕ Enjoy an excellent cafe culture w/ espressos for < $1 & cappuccinos for < $2.

🍅 Cook your own affordable meals with fresh, readily available meat & produce.

Fun Things to Do

While I wasn’t able to do all these things during my stay in Skopje, here is a list of fun & easily accessible things to do:

💠 Explore Skopje city center, the Stone Bridge, and the Old Bazaar

💠 Matka Canyon & Vrelo Cave

💠 Millennium Cross

💠 Lake Ohrid

💠 Daytrip to Kosovo

💠 Mavrovo National Park

💠 Wine tasting

💠 Winter downhill skiing

💠 Skopje Aqueduct

💠 Stobi archaeological site

For all these reasons, I say Skopje is poised to become the next digital nomad hotspot!

So…

What do you think?

Ready to book your flight there?

Have you been to Skopje?

If so, what’s your favorite thing to do there?
