Are Japan’s Nomad Visa Requirements Too Harsh?

Japan is launching its brand-spankin’ new digital nomad visa next month, and it’s the talk around the global town of nomads.

But before we hear that let’s find out the full details.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be digital nomads hailing from 49 countries and territories, adhering to established tax treaties and visa-related agreements with Japan.

  • The financial threshold for eligibility requires an annual income of $68,300

Visa Details

  • The digital nomad visa falls within the "specified activities" category, permitting holders to engage in remote work from any location within Japan.

  • Both employed and self-employed digital nomads are eligible to apply.

Duration and Preferences

  • The visa offers a flexible six-month stay, aligning with the preferences expressed by digital nomads in a survey. We have no idea where and when the survey was conducted.

Health Insurance

  • A crucial requirement for applicants is the possession of private health insurance, ensuring comprehensive coverage during their stay in Japan.

Alright so since we know the requirements, let’s see what the reaction is within the community.

CoLive Japan Community

The “hottest reaction” is currently happening in the Colive Japan Discord server. If you remember back we featured Akina Shu in the past who is a major influence in the Japanese nomad ecosystem and helping to set up programs that bring nomads to experience Japan.

She posted a question asking for feedback about the visa.

And the responses were mixed. You can see some of them below

All in all, we believe the visa is a great step forward, but it’s not for everyone. As a nomad, you have to decide what is a fit for you based on your values and other technical requirements (duration, income, etc.).

Let us know your thoughts and we’ll share the results in next week’s edition!
