Bansko: Bulgaria's unlikely new digital nomad hub

In Bansko, Bulgaria, a quaint town nestled in the Pirin Mountains, a digital nomad revolution is underway. Bansko Nomad Fest, in its fourth year, has transformed into the world's largest celebration of digital nomad life, drawing over 700 entrepreneurs and freelancers to this once-sleepy town. Despite the nomad trend favoring coastal cities, Bansko's appeal lies in its natural beauty, fast Wi-Fi, affordable living costs, and low taxes. Matthias Zeitler, a German entrepreneur, initiated this movement by establishing the town's first coworking space in 2016, which has since burgeoned. The local community warmly welcomes foreigners, fostering a multicultural atmosphere. Now, more than 300 remote workers call Bansko home each month, with the appeal extending beyond its ski season allure. As this digital nomad ecosystem grows, it's transforming Bansko into an international hub where nomads are putting down roots, drawn by its relaxed lifestyle and affordable living options. With the upcoming Coliving Semkovo project, the town is poised to become an even more significant digital nomad hotspot. Read full article.

Bali officials on the hunt for tourist seen meditating naked at Hindu temple

In Bali, authorities are actively searching for a foreign man who recently made headlines for meditating naked at a Hindu temple, causing outrage among locals. The incident gained widespread attention when it was initially posted by the community group "canggu_bali" and later reported by Balinese influencer and shoe designer Ni Luh Djelantik. In the video, the foreigner is seen meditating in front of a shrine, wearing nothing but a necklace and even inhaling smelling salts during the meditation. Djelantik strongly criticized the tourist's actions as disrespectful and urged authorities to take immediate action. The foreign national's identity and nationality have been kept private as the search continues. Bali officials are coordinating efforts with the Bali Regional Police to locate him and determine the incident's exact location and time. The man has claimed ownership of the land where the meditation took place in a social media post, but investigations are ongoing. Bali has been cracking down on misbehaving tourists and released a list of dos and don'ts to maintain the quality and dignity of its tourism sector. This incident has further fueled the push for responsible tourism in the region, with many locals expressing their anger over the tourist's behavior. Bali has recently deported more than 200 individuals, including 12 Australians, as part of their efforts to address visa violations and unruly tourist behavior. Travellers are urged to be aware of local laws and customs to avoid potential issues. Read full article.

Digital nomads have billions to spend. Entrepreneurs are cashing in.

In the world of remote work, companies are capitalizing on the digital nomad trend, providing services to cater to their needs. Nomad Cruise, founded by Johannes Voelkner, offers a unique mobile conference experience for digital nomads, fostering a sense of community as they travel the globe. Meanwhile, other businesses are cashing in on this growing market. SafetyWing, which offers travel health insurance for remote workers, reported $24 million in revenue last year. Selina, a chain of nomad-friendly hostels and hotels, saw its revenue skyrocket by 98.3% in FY 2022. With over 17 million digital nomads in the US and millions more aspiring to join, this market is only in its infancy. Entrepreneurs like Andrea Valeria and Meghann Reilly use social media to provide resources and services tailored to digital nomads, generating substantial income. Specialized niches, like those catered to by Bucketlist Bombshells, are also finding success in this rapidly growing industry. As more professionals embrace remote work, the market for digital nomads is poised for further expansion, offering entrepreneurs lucrative opportunities. Read full article.
