Colombia Debuts New Digital Nomad Visa

It seems there's a new digital nomad visa every other week, right? Well, Colombia is up next.

But this one is special because it's all thanks to the years of blood, sweat, and tears of one of our very own: Ilana Milkes Espinosa.

Meet Ilana

Pioneer Ilana Milkes Espinosa

Ilana Milkes is the co-founder, software designer, and CEO at ePioneers, a climate fintech bringing environmental credits on-chain, with studies in finance (+MBA in renewable energies), computer science, and history. Ilana brings 8+ years of work experience in hedge funds, private equity, derivatives trading, and edTech startup building (World Tech Makers).

An MIT Innovator U35, Global Shaper, and Colombia Marca Pais Entrepreneur, she enjoys developing innovative, technological, and creative ecosystems. She is a former professional soccer player for Colombia's national team.

How It Started

Ilana and her team originated Latin America's first digital nomad visa. From the initial proposal to Congress to helping write the final resolution, they supported the country all along the way to ignite what they called the CoRevolution and a new chapter in the region and the planet.

How It's Going

ePioneers is the new program born out of the hard work that helps you relocate to Colombia, the country of The Eternal Spring.

Here are some of the benefits for remote workers/ entrepreneurs/ freelancers with this new digital nomads visa:

  • 24-month stay (vs. having to stay 6 months in the country and purchase $1K USD airplane tickets to justify the tourism visa // or have to sign up for Spanish classes to justify the Student's visa)

  • Access to your Colombian state ID (no need to carry your passport anymore)

  • Access to direct renting of housing (no need for intermediaries or high-cost Airbnbs)

  • Access to banking (no need to carry cash all the time)

  • Access to other services like being able to open a company (you no longer have to justify $20K USD to be able to register a Colombian-based company); other benefits: you can hire qualified local talent

  • Access to super affordable, high-quality living and amazing meals between $5 - $10 USD

✈️LIFESTYLE

Is he really working?😂

Digital Nomads enjoy freedom from traditional office settings. They get to explore their passion through experiences and learn about new cultures. The standard 9-5 employment setting denies individuals the opportunity to explore adventurous activities such as surfing and snorkel diving. Due to the freedom that comes from digital nomadism, it is essential to consider the following lifestyle pillars:

  • Frequently working out

  • Watching your diet

  • Ensuring all professional tasks are done on time

  • Managing your budget

  • Learning a new language

How to learn a new language fast as a digital nomad

Digital nomads travel to different places. To ensure every stay is comfortable, a digital nomad should try to learn how to speak other languages. YouTube is an excellent source for learning new languages. Here are eight tips on how to learn a new language fast:

  1. Watch YouTube Tutorials

  2. Get a Learning Partner (may be a professional or a learner like you)

  3. Set Learning Goals i.e., “I will learn ten sentences and ten vocabularies every day”.

  4. Use Flashcards

  5. Start Thinking in the Language You Are Learning

  6. Read a Lot in the Language You are Learning

  7. Speak frequently to your accountability partner and engage in detailed discussions

  8. Go outdoors and talk to natives if they speak the language you are learning

Adjusting to new situations isn’t always easy. While you may have been dreaming of becoming a digital nomad for a while, it can still come as quite a shock if the lifestyle isn’t exactly what you thought it would be.

As someone who has gone from suburban life to living on a boat, then back to land during Covid and then back to sailing the world, I am used to adjusting to new situations. This has definitely contributed to my resilience, which has benefited me in many areas of my life. Here are some tips I’ve picked up along the way:

1) Plan and Prepare. Watch YouTube videos of people living your future life, read books, scour the net for blog posts, and learn all you can about what it is you want to do.

2) Imagine Yourself in Your Future Situation. Whether you’re traveling to a new country, embarking on a van life adventure or, like me, moving aboard a boat, really lean into picturing yourself in that life. What does it feel like? What are the sounds, smells, and sights? Manifest your future life or new situation, so it's not such a shock once you’re doing it.

3) Connect With Others Who Are Doing What You Want To Do. Put yourself out there - step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s through online groups or in real life, introduce yourself and express how inspired you are by them and their lifestyle. Ask them questions, and learn all you can from them. If you are genuine, people will want to help you. Ask to jump on a call or invite them for coffee and get to know them in real life if they are in the same location. Never underestimate the power of networking and connection.

4) Be Realistic With Your Expectations. Settling in takes time. Making friends doesn’t happen overnight. Remember to be gentle with yourself. Continue with self-care, even if your lifestyle has totally changed or you are in a different country. Practice gratitude; after all, being a digital nomad is a lifestyle many dream of. However, also remind yourself that what you’re doing is hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it. So manage your expectations - it’s not going to be all sunshine and rainbows.

30-day ‘Workation’ in an Italian village brought to you by Esther Jacobs

Esther Jacobs is a powerful speaker and a best selling author. She has been an entrepreneur for more than 30 years and a digital nomad in the last 15 years. A few years ago, she fell in love with a tiny village in Puglia, South Italy. She bought a plot of land, makes her own @tinytrullo olive oil, and organizes inspiration- and writing retreats there.

Over the course of her career, she has gotten so many requests from digital nomads and remote workers who want to try out the small Italian village. For this concern, she is hosting a 30-day ‘Workation’ event from 1st to 30th April 2023.

During your work vacation, you will get to know the locals and their way of life. A unique and authentic experience, without any hassles. With plenty of group activities and space for you to find your own rhythm. You can work in your own apartment, in a café or in a co-working space (such as the castle from the year 1100!). If you want to take a break, check the group app to see who else is up for a cup of coffee, to have lunch, or just to go for a walk. Enjoy each break, like you are on vacation.
