Bali Authorities Raise Concerns That Digital Nomads Are Overstepping The Line

In Bali, officials are grappling with the challenge of maintaining order among tourists and digital nomads. While the island is a favored destination for remote workers, concerns have arisen about some crossing legal boundaries. The Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies Board (ASITA) has observed a surge in foreigners using tourist accommodations as offices and conducting profit-driven tours and services, potentially violating their visa conditions. ASITA met with the National Police to address these issues, emphasizing the need to regulate these practices. Bali's police force plans to collaborate with ASITA to enforce permits for travel agents, preventing fake agencies and safeguarding local livelihoods. Additionally, the provincial government is cracking down on unregistered accommodation providers, citing significant tax shortfalls. Despite these challenges, Indonesia has actively promoted Bali as an ideal destination for digital nomads, emphasizing the B211a socio-cultural visa as a suitable option for extended stays. European castles, private chefs, and a startup school: These families are ditching the US to live the American dream abroad

Shirly and Erez Weinstein, immigrants from Israel, were living the American dream in suburban Atlanta but found their busy lives lacking fulfillment. Dissatisfied with education options for their kids, they embarked on a unique journey in 2018, selling their possessions and homeschooling their children while traveling the world in an RV. In 2022, they discovered Boundless Life, a startup catering to digital-nomad families. Boundless Life offers a global network with project-based education, community, and furnished homes for families who live in different locations for three months at a time. The company aims to enable parents to travel with their kids while providing a well-rounded education. While only a small fraction of digital nomads travel with children, businesses like Boundless Life are seizing the opportunity to make family nomading a reality. The Boundless program is based on an interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizing project-based learning and cultural immersion. Despite some challenges and costs, it offers an alternative to traditional schooling and a return to collective child-rearing in a global context. Read full article.

70M could become digital nomads in the next few years

The digital nomad trend is rapidly growing, with 17.3 million Americans, representing 11% of the workforce, now identifying as digital nomads, a 2% increase from 2022, according to a report by MBO Partners. An additional 70 million Americans are considering or planning to become digital nomads in the next few years. This trend has led to an expanding list of countries offering remote work visa schemes, including Spain, Canada, and Uruguay. Spain's residency visa, introduced in 2023, allows international teleworkers to live and work remotely for up to a year, with requirements such as a clean criminal record, private health insurance, and proof of financial stability. Canada is developing a "tech talent strategy" to attract foreign workers. Uruguay offers residence permits to digital nomads for up to a year, with plans to extend it. The trend is not limited to North America, as more than 60 countries now offer remote work visa schemes. The motivation behind this trend is not just economic but also the desire to integrate knowledge economies and promote innovation and talent exchange between digital nomads and local communities. The US is notably absent from this trend, losing talent to countries like Canada, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, which offer more favorable living conditions. Read full article.
